The Language School

Our small, friendly English language school offers English language courses on Britain's beautiful south coast. We can also offer work experience, Cambridge examination preparation, IELTS, CELTA, LCCI, High School and foundation programs. It is accredited by the British Council and we are members of ARELS.

The English Courses

Private English Tuition

Private lessons consist of the teacher and student only. The course content can be tailored to the needs of the student. This is a wonderful opportunity for highly motivated students to concentrate on the skills they need most. Course is subject to availability at the school.

Intensive English

This course starts every Monday and caters for students from beginner to advanced level. This course is for students with an interest in improving their English in a wider, general context, whether it is for travel, friendship or their career. The course is divided into morning and afternoon components, making it possible for students to study full-time and take electives. Regular testing is done to monitor the students’ performance and give feedback.

Cambridge Exam Preparation Courses

The Cambridge exams test students’ ability to use English (their vocabulary resource, their understanding of grammar) and their abilities in the four skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking). The exams take place over three days. The Reading, Use of English and Writing tests are held on one day, and the Speaking test (interview), and the Listening test on separate days.

There are four different types of exam courses and is subject to availability at the school.

- Preliminary English Test (PET). For students at an upper-elementary level.
- First Certificate in English (FCE). For students at an intermediate level.
- Certificate in Advanced English (CAE). For students at an upper-intermediate level.
- Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) . For students at an advanced level (close to native speaker level).

IELTS Exam course

The IELTS test is the standard test for students intending to study in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. It is also recognized by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. IELTS provides a reliable assessment of a student’s ability to read, write, speak and listen accurately in English.

English for Academic Purposes

This course is designed for students who want to take a course at university, college or further education institute. As the IELTS and TOEFL exams are often required to start tertiary education, the course does include preparation for these exams, but it also aims to train students in the specific research and study skills that they will need to succeed in their future studies.

English for Business Purposes

Students who wish to improve their English skills for business will certainly benefit from taking this course. It also prepares students for entry into business courses, or to take the Cambridge Business English Certificate. The course gives students practice in reading and writing business correspondence, and to communicate verbally (telephone skills, presentations, talks and business meetings). The focus is also on building the students' business vocabulary, as well as improving students' research skills.

English plus Work Experience (Unpaid Internship) Program

This programme gives you the opportunity to take an English language course followed by an internship spent working in a company/organisation in Brighton or the surrounding area.

It gives you a chance to practise your English in a real working environment and you will hopefully gain experience that will help you to get a job.

You study English at GEOS English Academy first. This can be General English or our Exam Preparation Course. After your English language course has finished, you move on to your internship.

English plus Work Experience (Hospitality) Program

This programme is mostly for people who have experience of hotel or restaurant work or who are studying hospitality management.

Holiday English Course Programs

Students can have the opportunity to combine an English language course with a sightseeing or adventure holiday! Holiday programs can be designed to focus on English and/or recreational activities, can be combined with homestay and a 24 hour emergency support service.
Our Holiday programs offer the student a wide variety of cultural and recreational activities. Activities range from pleasant barbecues and picnics to day trips to famous places.
A program can be designed to suit any requests.

Accommodation options

Students have the following housing options:

Homestay

A Homestay is the greatest experience you can have when you travel.
In an instant, you make friends and become a part of a family with whom you will correspond forever. You will play a great part in global exchange, promoting understanding and respect for other cultures and views.

Our Student Services Departments ensure that students are placed in caring and experienced Homestay families, while carefully matching families to students' Homestay requests. Students' welfare is as important to the school as their academic achievement, and we believe that this is what distinguishes us from other schools.

Schools provide 24-hour emergency contact numbers, which allow not only for students to feel safe and at ease, but their families in their own countries can have a peace of mind, too.

Au Pair (dependent on the school)

Au Pair is a program that places students with local host families that seek help with childcare or household tasks. In exchange for working, a student receives accommodation and meals.

Generally to be eligible for the au pair program, students must:
- Be between 18 and 30 years old, in good health, mature and responsible
- Speak English at a minimum of Intermediate level
- Be able to show that they have some experience in childcare and
household duties (such as cleaning, ironing and cooking)
- Provide references (An international driver's license, though not compulsory,
 would be an advantage)

Alternative Accommodation

Although GEOS does not really recommend alternative accommodation we understand that for some students it is the best option. This is why all schools are able to help in finding alternative accommodation i.e. backpackers, flat mates etc.

Schools will always have listings of shared accommodation arrangements and the friendly staff is always there to help any student who may have an enquiry.
